Steel Lockers — The Complete Buyer's Guide for UK Organisations

Steel lockers are available in hundreds of configurations. This complete guide helps you choose the right type, size and locking system for your organisation.

Types of Steel Locker

Single tier lockers provide one full-height compartment per locker. They offer the most storage space per user and are the right choice where users need to store large items — coats, bags, sports equipment or work clothing. Typical height 1,800mm.

Two tier lockers divide the full height into two compartments, one above the other. They store twice as many users in the same floor footprint as single tier. Popular in offices, schools and leisure facilities where storage requirements are moderate.

Three, four, five and six tier lockers divide the height into multiple smaller compartments. Suitable where users only need to store small personal items — phones, wallets, keys. Widely used in call centres, retail and hospitality environments.

Half-height lockers at approximately 900mm are popular where full-height lockers would feel oppressive or where a worktop surface above the lockers is required.

Locking Systems

Key lock — the simplest and most reliable option. Each compartment has its own key. Suitable for permanent allocation where users keep their key. Can be master-keyed for management access.

Combination lock — keyless operation using a 3 or 4 digit code. Suitable for hot-desking environments where lockers are allocated daily and key management is impractical.

Coin return lock — user inserts a coin to lock and receives it back on opening. Standard in leisure centres and public facilities where lockers are used by members of the public.

Electronic lock — keypad, RFID card or fob operation. The most flexible option for high-security or high-traffic environments. Audit trail available on networked systems.

Materials and Finishes

Steel lockers are manufactured from cold-rolled steel sheet, powder-coated in a wide range of standard and custom colours. Standard gauge steel is suitable for most office, school and leisure applications. Heavy gauge steel is available for higher security or more demanding environments. Perforated doors are available for ventilation in sports and changing room applications.
